When you spot the letters F A L U F F Y, you know it’s that time again. Time for another of that fluffaliciously round, red, cushion-eating dragon’s reviews!
It’s been a while, but the Fa’Luffy is back, and eager to share his opinions on all that entertains and delights (at least as far as books, movies, and games go).
For this Review, it was required that a book be picked out for scrutinising, and Fa’Luffy has chosen a very cool one! Not only is the story packed with action, intrigue and ninjas, but the author himself is equally as interesting – having worked as disc jockey, laboratory assistant, police officer, and even a monster in a side-show ghost train! He also holds extensive knowledge of Asian culture and traditional combat arts, and from this passion and learning has come the fantastic Middle Grade historical fantasy series: Moonshadow.
Which brings us to today’s review!
Today, Fa’Luffy will review: Moonshadow: Eye of the Beast
Publisher: Random House
Target Audience: MG (ages 9+)
Genre: Historical Fantasy
Medium: Available in Hardcover, Paperback, and eBook
Q: What’s it all about?
Fa’Luffy: It’s the dawn of an age of peace in medieval Japan, and a power-hungry warlord is plotting to plunge the nation into a deadly civil war using a secret weapon from the West. The Grey Light Order, a covert brotherhood of shinobi (ninja spy warriors) are tasked to stop this plot to protect the hard-won peace. For his first mission, the Grey Light Order’s youngest agent, Moonshadow, is sent on a perilous journey to capture the plans for the secret weapon.
Secret allies. Advanced sword skills. Unique powers. And courage. Does Moonshadow have what it takes to stop the re-igniting of civil war?
Well, you need to read it to find out! And if you’re pretty sure the hero wins out in the end, read it to find out how!
Q: Who would enjoy this?
Fa’Luffy: Those who like an easy, but interesting read. Those who enjoy intrigue and action. And those who can’t get enough of ninja coolness!
Q: What are some of your favourite aspects?
Fa’Luffy: Moonsahdow is a flufftastic main character. He’s brave, skilled, and honourable; a really great figure for young boys to look up to. The story is really cool! There’s stealth missions, secret plots, and awesome swordfights. Moonshadow’s Eye of the Beast ability is awesome (the ability to link your mind with a creature, and use its senses). Plus, there’s a young, talented, and smart female ninja that girl readers will love, so it’s a win-win for both genders. Oh, and there’s an awesome cat in it!
A neat little Teaser Trailer!
Q: What are some of your less favourite aspects?
Fa’Luffy: It’s a little slow to start off with, so that may be a struggle for the more hesitant readers. Some of the terminologies and names may confuse younger readers (but there is a glossary at the back of the book, so check it out!). Really, there’s not much to fault about this book. It’s perfect for it’s target audience, and is even a neat bit of entertainment for older readers.
Q: How would you sum up your opinion?
Fa’Luffy: A great adventure with fast-paced action, awesome ninja characters, and a story founded on fascinating, historical facts flavoured with some neat fantasy elements. For those who enjoy an easy, interesting adventure, you’ll not regret giving Moonshadow: Eye of the Beast as go. And what’s even better is that it’s the first in a series! Books two and three are available as well. So if you enjoy the first book, be sure to check out the others.
Q: What is the final Fa’Luffy Verdict?
Fa’Luffy: Out of a total of 5 Fa’Luffy Stars:
